DR. FRANCIS ADDYSENIOR LECTURERDEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGYFACULTY OF BIOSCIENCENYANKPALA Campus
Background
Francis Addy holds a PhD in Natural Sciences, an MSc. in Biotechnology and a BSc. in Agriculture Technology. His specialty is molecular parasitology and parasite population genetics. Dr Addy is a senior lecturer in the Department of Biotechnology and Molecular Biology of the Faculty of Biosciences. He has over 10 years teaching experience in the university where he lecturers in courses such as animal biotechnology, cell and molecular biology, evolution, animal tissue culture and engineering, philosophy of science and science diplomacy at the postgraduate and undergraduate levels. Dr Addy serves as external examiner for postgraduate programmes in sister universities in Ghana. In his research experience, he has over 20 refereed journal article publications and several abstract contributions in local and international scientific conferences. He has led and collaborated with other researchers on many projects in parasitology and microbiology. He is a member of the DFG funded research consortium, Cystic Echinococcosis in sub-Saharan Africa Research initiative (CESSARi) where he is currently the local principal investigator (West Africa lead) of the project, transmission ecology and risk factors of cystic echinococcosis in sub-Saharan Africa. He is also investigating anthelmintic resistance in liver flukes of cattle in Ghana under the funding of the International Foundation for Science (IFS). Dr Addy’s current professional tagline is one-health assessment of parasitic helminth populations in urban and unique ecological settings. He aspires to characterize the genetic diversity and population structure of important parasitic helminths affecting animals and humans, develop molecular diagnostic tools for parasitic helminth infections and influence policy and practices in parasitic helminths infection management and control. Dr Addy had served in various capacities in the university including, graduate programmes coordinator, research and grant support unit coordinator, chief editor of the Bioscience Newsletter, departmental quality assurance officer and Third Trimester Field Practical Programme Coordinator. He is the Honourary National Secretary of the Ghana Science Association (GSA) and a member of the West African Research Association (WARA).
