About The Programme

The MPhil Agricultural Economics programme is offered by the Department of Agricultural and Food Economics under the Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Consumer Sciences. The MPhil programme is for a duration of two academic years (24 months) organize during regular academic year session. The MPhil programme in Agricultural Economics is designed with the following aims:

  1. To provide students with useful quantitative and qualitative analytical skills.
  2. To provide practical knowledge, expert leadership, and field experience to help solve the complexity of problems facing agricultural and rural development.
  3. To equip students with the knowledge and understanding of agricultural policy conceptualization, formulation and implementation.

Employment Prospects of Graduates            

  1. Graduates of the programme may find employment in the following job markets:
  2. Government ministries such as the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to undertake work in policy analyses;
  3. Public and private sector companies involved in agribusiness and agricultural industries;
  4. Universities and analogous higher institutions of learning as academics;
  5. Research institutes, international and non-governmental organizations concerned with the economic analysis of agricultural sector issues and agricultural consultancies;
  6. Development and policy advocacy institutions;
  7. Agricultural development, rural and other commercial banks as project officers;
  8. Agribusiness industry; and
  9. Agricultural trade and export industry. 
Entry Requirements

TO BE ADMITTED INTO A PROGRAMME LEADING TO THE AWARD OF A GRADUATE DIPLOMA OR THE MASTER'S DEGREE (MSC. AND M.PHIL), A CANDIDATE MUST:

  • Have obtained a good first degree (at least Second Class Lower) in an appropriate field of study from a recognised University. Applicants with a first degree below Second-class Lower division may be admitted upon the recommendation of the Department. Applicants with masters non-research may be admitted to a 12-month top-up programme in the same or related field leading to the award of an MPhil.
  • Submit an official transcript of your academic record.
  • Submit two referee reports from somebody familiar with the applicant’s academic work.
  • In addition, those seeking a research-related degree must attach a 3- 5 page research proposal of their intended area of research.
  • Satisfy any additional requirements prescribed by the Faculties/Schools. These may include relevant work experience, a written entrance examination and an interview.
  • Applicants must note that all MSc non-research programmes are available through Sandwich.
